Center Valley, PA (September 1, 2016) – The DeSales University men's soccer team suffered a 3-1 loss in the 2016 season opener on Thursday afternoon vs. Rutgers-Newark.
Rutgers-Newark (1-0) took an early 1-0 lead in the 13
th minute but the Bulldogs (0-1) tied it just 2:52 later when sophomore
Max Cortina scored off assists from sophomore
Zach Reichard and freshman
Javaughn Hussett.
The Scarlet Raiders took a 2-1 lead just 2:25 before the half added the insurance goal on a beautiful free kick from
Sebastian Gostynski inside the upper 90 on the far post in the 65
th minute.
Newark had a 20-13 advantage in shots, while the Bulldogs had a 10-4 edge in corner kicks. Junior
Dan Sulpizio was terrific in goal despite the loss making eight saves.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Saturday when take on Bridgewater College (VA) in the Eastern Mennonite University Tournament beginning at 4:00 pm.
