Madison, NJ (September 10, 2016) – Sophomore
Zach Reichard scored two goals and seemed to record a hat trick but the third tally was disallowed as the DeSales University men's soccer team fell at Drew University, 4-3, in overtime on Saturday evening.
DSU (1-4) took a 1-0 lead in the 15
th minute on Reichard's first goal of the game as fellow sophomore
Michael Kirby pounced on a Ranger (3-1) turnover and found Reichard streaking towards the net for the game's first goal.
Drew evened the score in the 21
st minute on a tally from
Joe Sollod and took a 2-1 lead in the 27
th minute after a marker from
Anthony McMyne.
DeSales pushed it back to even (2-2) at 41:05 when junior
Joey Malvestuto sent a long pass over the top to Reichard who got behind the Drew defense, dodged one defender and beat the Ranger keeper low to the right for his second tally that sent the game into the half tied at two.
The Bulldogs seemed to take a 3-2 lead a little over nine minutes into the second-half when Reichard caught the Ranger keeper out of the net. He sent a chip towards the goal mouth where a Drew defender tried to stop the ball from going in the net but the ball bounced off the crossbar and then seemed to tickle the net above but to the surprise of both the Drew defenders and Reichard play continued and the goal was not allowed.
DeSales did eventually take that 3-2 lead in the 73
rd minute when Kirby dribbled thru several defenders to tally his first goal of the year.
Drew tied the game at three in the 81
st minute as
Andy Imoh scored on a penalty kick and Imoh then set up
Dylan Hammer for the game-winner at 97:04 of the first overtime to give the Rangers the win.
Drew finished the game with a slight 20-15 edge in shots, while the Bulldogs had a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks. Senior
Ryan O'Neill made five saves in the net for DeSales.
DSU is back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Gwynedd-Mercy University for another non-conference game beginning at 6:00 pm.
