Center Valley, PA (September 17, 2016) - The DeSales University women's soccer team scored first but was unable to hang on falling to 11th ranked Christopher Newport University, 2-1, in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (4-3) nearly had a 2-0 lead as junior
Angelica Bertola hit the crossbar just five minutes into the game before senior
Jess Wetherhold scored on a free kick at the penalty spot at 17:01 after CNU (5-1) keeper picked up a ball played back to her in the box. Sophomore
Caroline Nealon had an assist on the goal.
The Captains needed just 2:49 to tie the game at one when
Allie McWilliams scored as she was unmarked in the box on a crossing pass from
Victoria Perry. CNU then took the lead for good at 34:54 as
Kayla Locklear scored in almost identical fashion taking a cross from
Keiley McCarthy and finding the back of the net.
DSU had one really good chance at tying the game late in the second-half when sophomore
Erin Crystal fired a loose ball from about 30 yards out right into the near post upper 90 but it was tipped away by the CNU keeper and after Bertola pounced on the rebound, her endline shot was saved thwarting the dangerous action in front of the net.
Both teams had nine shots, while DeSales held a 6-4 shots on goal advantage. CNU enjoyed a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Senior
Emily Hoats made two saves in between the pipes.
DSU is back in action on Wednesday, September 21st when they take to the road to face Haverford College beginning at 4:00 pm.
