Field Hockey Drops Conference Opener, 1-0, to Wilkes

Center Valley, PA (September 24, 2016) - The DeSales University field hockey team came up just short falling to Wilkes University, 1-0, in the MAC Freedom opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon on homecoming.

After a scoreless first-half the Colonels (6-3, 1-0 MAC Freedom) got the first and only goal on the board at 38:18 when Marissa Surdy poked a loose ball past DSU's keeper just before freshman Katarina Polyviou was about to clear the loose ball in front of her.

DSU had chances to tie the game with the best coming with just 25 seconds left in the game when freshman Christie Hansen poked a centering pass just in front of the Colonel keeper's pads but the Wilkes keeper was there for the save to preserve the shutout win.

WIlkes had a 21-9 shot advantage (11-6 on goal) and a 14-7 edge in penalty corners.  Polyviou made 8 saves in the loss and junior Autumn Klucsarits had two defensive saves for the Bulldogs.

DeSales is back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Susquehanna University for another non-conference game beginning at 7:00 pm.
