Volleyball Sweeps to Tournament Title; Wallitsch MVP

Center Valley, PA (September 3, 2016) – The DeSales University volleyball team swept two more matches on Saturday afternoon to post a perfect 4-0 weekend record to earn the DeSales University Invitational Tournament title for the first time in school-history.
 
The Bulldogs (4-0) defeated Washington College (MD), 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-21) and Baruch College, 3-0 (25-15, 25-10, 25-14), on Saturday after sweeping two wins over Gwynedd-Mercy and Rutgers-Camden on Friday evening.
 
Senior Lisa Wallitsch earned Tournament Most Valuable Player honors averaging 10.5 assists per set and quarterbacking the DSU offense to a .316 weekend hitting percentage.  Sophomore Gabby Savite` also earned All-Tournament Team honors hitting .346 with a team-high 46 kills and ranked second on the team with 37 digs.
 
Match #1 vs. Washington College (MD), 3-0
The Bulldogs avenged a tournament loss to Washington College last season on Saturday hitting .308 as a team and pounding down 48 kills in two matches.  After two easy wins in sets one and two, DSU had to battle back from a 17-12 deficit in the third set, scoring 13 of the final 17 points for the 25-21 win.
 
Savite` led the way with 18 kills, hitting .516 for the match, and adding 14 digs.  Freshman Jenna Sievert totaled 11 kills and hit .500, while freshman Morghan Shoemaker had eight kills and sophomore Taylor Antoniewicz added seven kills and two blocks.
 
Wallitsch dished out 43 assists and sophomore Natalie Gray had 15 digs.  Freshman Cristal Fernandez  finished with nine digs and three aces in the win.
 
Match #2 vs. Baruch, 3-0
DSU used a balanced attack with three different players totaling seven kills including Fernandez, Savite`, and Sievert in the win.  Shoemaker added four blocks and senior Jess Swanson finished with six kills and hit .600 for the match.
 
Wallitsch added 27 assists and Gray finished with a match-high 16 digs and three aces.  DSU had 11 aces as a team.
 
The Bulldogs are back in action on Tuesday when they host local rival Moravian College for a non-conference match beginning at 7:00 pm.
