Bertola Ties Scoring Record in 2-0 Win over Wilkes

Center Valley, PA (October 14, 2017) - Senior Angelica Bertola (East Stroudsburg, PA) scored her 17th goal of the season tying the all-time career mark in points leading the DeSales University women's soccer team past Wilkes University, 2-0, in MAC Freedom action on Saturday afternoon.

Bertola is single handedly trying to re-write the record book in her senior season as she now has 17 goals on the year, one shy of tying the single-season mark, and 39 points this year, tied for the single-season record with Hall of Famer Jeneen Covely, Rachel Shive, and herself last season.  The goal today gives her 47 career tallies, tied for second all-time, and moves her into a tie for the all-time scoring lead, with Covely, with 113 career points.

After a scoreless first-half her goal became the eventual game-winner when fellow senior Rachel Logue (Burlington, NJ) played a ball over top the defense freeing up Bertola for a 1-v-1 with the keeper as she deeked past the charging net minder and scored just inside the far post at 49:16.

The Bulldogs got an insurance goal in the 75th minute when freshman Rachel Medlar (Coplay, PA), who also tied a record today with her 11th assist on the season tying the single-season mark set by Jess Wetherhold, played a ball thru the defense to sophomore Sophie Goad (Reading, PA) who deposited her seventh tally of the season.

The DSU defense did the rest as freshman Lia Gaccione (Sparta, NJ) made six saves to help the Bulldogs record their third shutout of the year, and the second straight by Gaccione.

DeSales had a slim 10-9 advantage in shots and a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.

The Bulldogs are back in action on Wednesday when they host Delaware Valley University beginning at 3:00 pm.
