Williamsport, PA (November 17, 2017) - Oneonta hit a jumper with three seconds left breaking a tie at 64 and handing the DeSales University men's basketball team a 66-64 loss on day one of the Dutch Birch Tip-off Tournament at Lycoming College on Friday evening.
After sophomore
Tracy Simsick (Harleysville, PA) hit a three with 1:50 left giving DSU a 64-62 lead, Oneonta knocked down two free throws at the 1:27 mark to tie the game at 64. Back-to-back turnovers gave the Bulldogs possession back with 49 seconds left as DSU called timeout.
Out of the timeout senior
Steven Ciotti (Yardley, PA) drove the lane turning down a wide open jumper on the left wing as his attempt was knocked out of bounds with DeSales still in possession but just one second left on the shot clock. Oneonta stole the inbounds pass andÂ
Matthew Boyd hit a pull-up jumper on the right wing with three ticks left making it a 66-64 game. After both teams called timeout, Simsick got the inbounds pass and quickly advanced the ball up to the corner where a three at the buzzer from freshman
Mike Bealer (Harleysville, PA)Â was blocked as time expired.
Senior
Connor Jones (Hawley, PA) led DeSales with 22 points, 20 in the second-half and pulled down six rebounds. Simsick added 12 points as 11 of the 12 players who saw action reached the scoring column.
Oneonta saw four players reach double digits includingÂ
Kevin Mackin with a team-high 17 points,Â
Andres Rivera with 12 points,Â
Carson Jacobs with 11 points, and Boyd with 10 points, including the game-winner with three seconds left.
DeSales (1-1) had a 28-27 lead after Bealer hit a three with 21 seconds left in the first-half giving DSU the halftime advantage.
The Bulldogs led for the first eight minutes of the second-half and by as many as six points twice before Oneonta took a 45-44 lead at the 12:04 mark.
DSU was down one 53-52 when Jones hit three straight triples for the Bulldogs giving DeSales a 61-57 lead with 4:42 to go. The Bulldogs then went scoreless over the next 2:52 until the Simsick 3 with 1:50 left.
The game featured 14 lead changes and seven ties. Neither team shot well from the field but the Bulldogs did flourish from outside the arc hitting 11-of-23 (.478) but just 38.7 percent from the field in the game. Oneonta enjoyed a 44-35 advantage on the glass.
