Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | BJ Spigelmyer - DeSales SID

Late Comeback Falls Short in 62-57 Loss to Moravian

Center Valley, PA (November 21, 2017) - The DeSales University women's basketball team used an 11-0 run midway thru the fourth quarter to take its first lead of the game but Moravian College scored the final six points of the game in a 62-57 win over the Bulldogs in non-conference action on Tuesday evening in Billera Hall.

The loss is the first of the season for the Bulldogs (3-1).  Junior Leandra Sterner (Northampton, PA) and senior Kaitlin Kelly (Newtown, PA) led DSU with 11 points apiece as DeSales struggled to find the shooting touch in the loss on Tuesday.

Moravian (3-1) got double-doubles from three players including Maddie Capuano (23 pts., 10 reb.), Camille McPherson (16 pts., 10 reb.), and Nadine Ewald (12 pts., 14 reb.) in the win.

The Greyhounds opened the game making their first four shots taking a 10-4 lead and led 19-11 after one quarter of play.  The lead hovered between nine and 14 points in the second quarter before a McPherson jumper near the end of the half gave the visitor's a 34-21 lead into the halftime locker room.

DSU made a mini-run mid-way thru the third quarter getting within seven points (42-35) at the 4:17 mark before both teams went scoreless for the next two minutes as McPherson ended the drought with two freebies.

The Moravian lead remained at 10 (53-43) with 6:45 left to play when freshman Kristina Polak (Bethlehem, PA) started and ended an 11-0 run with jumpers from the top of the key giving the Bulldogs its first lead of the game, 53-52, with 3:12 left to play.  Kelly also contributed in the run with five points.

Capuano answered the change of leads for the first time with a three but Kelly answered right back with another triple staking DSU to a 57-56 lead with 2:10 to go.  Capuano had the answer once again hitting a jumper with 1:51 left and a jumper on the other end from Polak was off the mark with 90 ticks left.

After two missed Moravian free throws and a missed layup from the Greyhounds on the ensuing possession, DSU turned the ball over and Moravian made it a three-point game with 27 seconds left after two free throws from Capuano.  The Bulldogs got a good look on a three to tie from Kelly with seven seconds left but it was off the mark and MC iced the game from the line with two more Capuano free throws.

The Bulldogs got themselves in foul trouble all night as six different players ended the game with four or more fouls leading to 36 Moravian free throws as compared to just 11 total fouls for MC and just 10 free throw attempts for the Bulldogs.  Both teams shot poorly with the Greyhounds hitting just 30.0 percent from the field and DeSales converting 29.9 percent.  DSU did force 25 turnovers and scored 26 points off those turnovers and the Greyhounds dominated the glass out-rebounding the Bulldogs, 64-41, for the game.

DeSales is now off for the Thanksgiving holidays and will return to action on Wednesday, November 29th when they travel to Arcadia University for a non-conference game beginning at 6:00 pm.
