Gwynedd-Valley, PA (December 4, 2017) - Junior
Leandra Sterner (Northampton, PA) scored a season-high 29 points leading the DeSales University women's basketball team past Gwynedd-Mercy University, 85-60, in non-conference action on Monday evening.
Sterner shot 10-for-21 from the field and added four assists. Senior
Kaitlin Kelly (Newtown, PA) added 12 points and freshman
Kristina Polak (Bethlehem, PA) had 10 points off the bench. Junior
Morgan Birmelin (Honesdale, PA) flirted with another triple-double finishing with eight points, nine rebounds, seven assists, and seven steals, while freshman
Lauren Christ (Hazlet, NJ) scored a season-high eight points.
GMU (4-2) had just one player reach double digits,
Sydney Thompson, with 10 points.
DSU used a 10-0 run mid-way thru the first quarter to open up a 17-6 lead led by three points each from Polak and Kelly.
The lead swelled to as many as 15 points (37-22) with 3:25 left in the second quarter before the Griffins closed the half on a 15-6 run to cut down the deficit to just six points (43-37) at the break.
The Bulldogs regained control opening the third quarter on a 19-6 run to take a 62-43 lead at the 3:42 mark and never looked back from there.
DeSales finished the game shooting 42.5 percent from the field and held GMU to just 36.4 percent shooting. The Bulldogs forced 23 Griffin turnovers and scored 25 points off those turnovers. DSU also controlled the glass, out-rebounding Gwynedd, 45-33.
DeSales is back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Stevens Institute of Technology for another non-conference game.
