Baseball Lets Final Game of Trip Slip Away; Falls 10-9 to UMASS-Boston

Winter Haven, FL (March 10, 2017) - The DeSales University baseball team led 8-0 thru four innings and had a 9-5 advantage entering the ninth inning but UMASS-Boston scored five times in the top ninth inning in a 10-9 come from behind win on DSU's final game of its spring trip to Florida.

The Bulldogs (3-7) were in complete control of this game for the first eight innings scoring five times in the first on an RBI single from senior Tommy DePaul, a two-RBI double from senior Mike Kacergis, and a two RBI single from sophomore Tommy Epsaro.

DSU added three more runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-0 lead on RBIs from DePaul, senior Tyler Sweeney, and Kacergis.

UMASS-Boston (2-1) started chipping away scoring twice in the fifth, once in the sixth, and twice in the seventh and the Bulldogs added one run in the seventh on a bases loaded walk from junior Hunter Hart.

Senior Cameron Hoos started the ninth inning on the bump looking to close out the win but he walked the first two batters of the inning and then gave up a two-run double making it a 9-7 game.  After recording an out, junior Adam Donovan replaced him but he walked the first two batters he faced loading the bases before getting a pop out for the second out of the inning.

An RBI single one batter later tied the game at nine and a hit batter and another walk forced in the 10th run of the game and the Bulldogs were unable to mount a rally in the bottom half of the inning.

Donovan suffered the loss falling to 0-2 on the year.  Senior Andrew Schuler, who earns TW Cooper Insurance Player of the Game honors, had pitched well to start the game allowing just two runs over five innings, striking out three.

Epsaro led the offensive attack with three hits and three RBIs...Kacergis was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two walks, Licamara had two hits, and DePaul had two RBIs in the loss.

The Bulldogs travel back to campus now and are scheduled (weather pending) to return to action on March 15th at Haverford College beginning at 3:30 pm.
