Felix Martinez Jr. allowed just one run over 7+ innings leading the DeSales University baseball team to a 6-2 win and a weekend sweep of Wilkes University on a chilly Sunday afternoon at Butz Field.
Martinez Jr. scattered seven hits and allowed just one run over 7 1/3 innings, striking out seven and walking just one. Senior
Tyler Cooperman came on in the ninth with the bases loaded and the Bulldogs (7-7, 3-0 MAC Freedom) leading by four runs to get the final out and earn his second save of the year.
DSU took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when junior
Hunter Hart singled and scored one batter later on a throwing error from the Colonel (5-9, 0-3 MAC Freedom) left fielder. Sophomore
Preston Amato then scored on a sacrifice fly from senior
Tyler Sweeney.
Wilkes got within a run in the second inning before the Bulldogs took a 5-1 lead in the third on a two-RBI double from sophomore
Tommy Epsaro and an RBI single from senior
Richie Lancashire. The two teams then exchanged runs in the ninth inning to provide the final tally.
Epsaro finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Amato had two hits, and senior
Mike Kacergis was on-base four times and scored twice.
The Bulldogs are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Swarthmore College for a non-conference game beginning at 3:30 pm.
