Diaz Homer in Tenth Lifts Baseball past Eastern in 15-13 Slugest

St. David's, PA (April 13, 2017) - Freshman Sergio Diaz hit a two-run home run in the top of the 10th inning lifting the DeSales University baseball team past Eastern University, 15-13, in the first of a three-game set in MAC Freedom action on Thursday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (13-11, 8-2 MAC Freedom) racked up 23 hits and overcame an early 5-0 deficit after the Eagles (9-13, 5-5 MAC Freedom) took a 5-0 lead in the first inning chasing sophomore starter Felix Martinez Jr..

DSU began its comeback in the top of the second inning scoring three times on RBI base hits from sophomore Tommy Epsaro, Diaz, and freshman Jamie Bavaro, the first hit of his career.  EU answered with two runs in the bottom of the second but the Bulldogs came all the way back with five in the third inning, highlighted by a grand slam from junior Conner Lafferty, giving DeSales an 8-7 lead.  Junior Hunter Hart also homered during the five-run third.

The Eagles tied it at eight in the bottom of the third and it remained tied at eight heading into the fifth inning when DeSales scored four times on sac flies from Diaz and senior Mike Kacergis as well as RBI hits from senior Tommy DePaul and sophomore Preston Amato.  DSU added a run in the seventh to take a 13-9 lead after an RBI groundout from Kacergis, but Eastern tied the game at 13 with two home runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Neither team was able to score in the eighth or ninth innings.  With one out in the top of the 10th inning Epsaro singled.  After Lafferty struck out, Diaz hit a two-run shot, the first dinger of his career, giving DSU a 15-13 lead and ultimately the win after senior Tyler Cooperman set down the side in order in the bottom of the frame.

Cooperman got the win pitching four innings of relief allowing three runs and six hits.  Amato and Diaz each finished with four hits, while Diaz and Lafferty each drove in four runs. Epsaro had three hits and scored four times as eight of the nine Bulldog starters had at least one hit.

Diaz earns TW Cooper Insurance Player of the Game honors with his first career home run, the game-winner in the 10th inning.
