Center Valley, PA (April 15, 2017) - Senior
Andrew Schuler allowed just three hits and one run in game one but several base running mistakes in game two cost the DeSales University baseball team a chance at a DH sweep of Eastern University winning game one, 3-1, before dropping game two, 7-6, in MAC Freedom action on Saturday afternoon.
Game One (W/3-1)
Schuler was outstanding yet again in the opener limiting the high powered Eagle (10-14, 6-6 MAC Freedom) offense to just three hits and one run in a complete-game seven inning effort to earn his fourth win of the season.
DSU had a 1-0 lead early as sophomore
Tommy Epsaro hit his fifth home run of the season in the second inning before EU tied it in the fourth.
The game remained tied into the sixth inning when freshman
Sergio Diaz got his third game-winning RBI in as many games, doubling home junior
Conner Lafferty. Junior
Konner Schneider then doubled down the left field line plating Diaz with an insurance run as Schuler retired the side in the seventh.
Diaz and Schneider each had two hits in the game one win to lead an eight-hit attack. Schuler struck out nine in the CG effort.
Game Two (L/6-7)
Game two was tied at two after three innings with Diaz homering to left centerfield in the second and senior
Mike Kacergis knocking in junior
Hunter Hart in the third inning. DSU could have had more in the third but Amato hesitated on a wild pitch with one out in the third and was thrown out at the plate spoiling a bigger threat.
After EU took a 3-2 lead in the fourth DSU had another chance to take control of the contest but coughed up a few runs with some baserunning mistakes. After Lafferty walked to lead off the inning, Diaz hit a double off the right field wall but Lafferty was gunned down at home for the innings first out. Diaz eventually moved to third on a wild pitch and sophomore
Randall Pacchioli was hit by a pitch. He was thrown out stealing at second base on a missed hit and run sign by Schneider at the plate and after walking to put runners back on first and third with two outs, Schneider was picked off first to end the inning.
The Eagles eventually extended its lead to 4-2 in the fifth but DSU tied it with two runs in the fifth on a two-out two-run double by Epsaro scoring Kacergis and Amato.
Both teams went quietly in the sixth but Eastern struck for three runs in the seventh as
Andrew Boykin hit a three-run home run over the left-centerfield wall giving EU a 7-4 lead.
DeSales threatened as Hart singled and Amato doubled to put runners on second and third to leadoff the inning. Kacergis knocked in Hart with a sacrfice fly and Amato scored on a wild pitch cutting the margin down to one run. Laffery singled with two out and Diaz walked to put runners on first and second but senior
Michael Hronich struck out swinging to end game.
Senior
Tyler Cooperman took the loss allowing the three runs in the seventh inning. Hart, Amato, Kacergis, and Diaz each had two hits with Kacergis and Epsaro each knocking in two runs in the game two loss.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Monday when they host Ursinus College in a non-conference game beginning at 4:00 pm.
