Baseball Comeback Falls Short in 5-4 Loss at Rutgers-Newark

Center Valley, PA (April 19, 2017) - After falling behind 5-1 thru two innings the DeSales University baseball team scored once in the fifth and twice in the sixth to pull within one run but could get no closer falling to Rutgers-Newark, 5-4, in a non-league game on Wednesday afternoon.

DSU (15-13) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single from senior Mike Kacergis but surrendered four runs in the first inning on four walks and one hit.  Newark (20-7-1) added one more run in the second inning to take a 5-1 lead.

DeSales got one back in the fifth on another RBI single from Kacergis and two more in the sixth to get within a run on RBI singles from junior Hunter Hart and sophomore Preston Amato.

The Bulldogs threatened again in the eighth with three straight singles but senior Tommy DePaul was caught stealing after the first of three straight singles spoiling the rally.

Amato finished 4-for-5 with an RBI, Kacergis had two hits and two RBIs, and Hart and DePaul each had two hits as the top four in the batting order were a combined 10-for-18.
