Sluggish Start Dooms Men's Lacrosse in 9-8 Loss to Wilkes

Center Valley, PA (April 19, 2017) - The DeSales University men's lacrosse team fell behind 6-1 to Wilkes University and never fully recovered as a fourth quarter rally fell short with a turnover on DSU's final possession as the Bulldogs fell to Wilkes University, 9-8, in MAC Freedom action on Wednesday evening.

The Bulldogs (5-6, 2-2 MAC Freedom) dominated the stat sheet out-shooting Wilkes (4-8, 1-3 MAC Freedom), 46-24, picking up more ground balls, 28-16, clearing the ball on 18-of-19 tries, and forcing eight more turnovers than they committed, but Wilkes won 11-of-21 face-offs and made the most of its 24 shot attempts, putting 17 on goal and scoring on nine of them.

The Colonels scored the game's first two goals and led 6-1 with 6:17 left in the second quarter before taking a 6-2 lead into the locker room.

WU extended its lead to 8-2 with the first two tallies of the third quarter and led 9-4 after three quarters of play.

The Bulldogs finally mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter as junior Josh Harman scored quickly to make it 9-5.  Junior Bryan Weber and senior Justin Wilson then scored back-to-back goals over the span of 42 seconds and Wilson scored again with 2:33 left to make it a 9-8 score.

DSU got possession and called timeout with 1:19 left but after working the ball around, Weber was stripped of the ball, and the Colonels gained possession and were able to run the last 25-30 seconds off the clock for the win.

Weber and Wilson each had three goals and Harman finished with two goals and one assist.  Freshman Justin Monaghan and sophomore Tommy Friedman each had one assist in the loss.  Freshman Kevin Sweeney did a nice job on the face-off winning 6-of-12, while senior Sean Palen led the way with eight ground balls and three caused turnovers.  Freshman Jack Carney and Frank Krug also had three caused turnovers.  Sophomore Matt Barry had eight saves.

The Bulldogs are back in action on Saturday when they host Delaware Valley University on senior day beginning at 1:00 pm.
