Center Valley, PA (April 2, 2017) - Sophomore
Felix Martinez Jr. tossed a five-hit shutout in game two leading the DeSales University baseball team past FDU-Florham, 8-0, salvaging a split of a MAC Freedom doubleheader on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Butz Field.
Game One (L/1-3)
The Bulldogs (8-10, 4-1 MAC Freedom) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on two walks, a hit batter, and a wild pitch but that was it offensively as FDU's (6-6, 1-3 MAC Freedom)
Kenny Carrier no-hit DSU over seven innings allowing just three walks and hitting one batter in the win.
Carrier was perfect over the final five innings as DeSales did not get a base runner since a leadoff walk in the second inning.
FDU tied the score at one in the bottom of the first inning and took the lead for good in the third with two runs. Senior
Andrew Schuler took the loss despite pitching well allowing just six hits and three runs, striking out seven over seven innings.
Game Two (W/8-0)
Martinez Jr. was outstanding in game two allowing just two baserunners to reach second base over seven innings to improve to 4-0 on the year. He struck out three walk and walked just two in the win.
DSU got its first run in the second inning on two Devil errors and took a 5-0 lead with four runs in the third inning on five singles and two more FDU errors including RBI hits from sophomore
Nick White and senior
Mike Kacergis.
The Bulldogs added two tallies in the sixth inning on a few more Florham errors and another tally in the seventh inning on two walks and a Devil miscue.
White finished the game with three runs scored as DSU took advantage of five walks and eight FDU errors in the win.
Martinez Jr. is named the TW Cooper Insurance Player of the Game with his five-hit shutout effort.
The Bulldogs will close the three-game set tomorrow traveling to FDU-Florham for the last game of the series beginning at 3:30 pm.
