Center Valley, PA (April 9, 2017) - Sophomore
Preston Amato had five hits and five RBIs in two games leading the DeSales University baseball team to a doubleheader split with King's College winning game one, 16-6, before dropping game two, 11-8, in MAC Freedom action on Sunday afternoon at Butz Field.
Game One (W/16-6)
DSU (10-11, 6-2 MAC Freedom) got one run in the second inning on a walk, two hit batters, and a Monarch (11-9, 5-3 MAC Freedom) error and took a 3-0 lead in the fourth on another King's error and three singles, including RBI base hits from Amato and sophomore
Tommy Epsaro.
KC got within one run with two tallies of its own in the fourth and both teams went quietly in the fifth before the flood gates opened.
The Bulldogs exploded in the sixth inning scoring seven times on six hits including a two-RBI single from junior
Hunter Hart and senior
Mike Kacergis, an RBI double from sophomore
Nick White, and an RBI single from senior
Michael Hronich.
The Monarchs got four back in the bottom of the frame to pull within 10-6 but DSU put the game away with six runs in the top of the seventh on five walks, two hit batters, and a two-RBI double from Amato.
Senior
Andrew Schuler earned the win scattering six hits and allowing five earned over 5 2/3 innings, striking out seven and junior
Konner Schneider closed out the win with 1 1/3 scoreless.
Amato finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs, Hart had two hits and two RBIs, Kacergis scored three times and had two RBIs, White and senior
Richie Lancashire each scored twice, Epsaro was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, and senior
Danny Licamara had two hits in the game one win.
Game Two (L/8-11)
DSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single from Lancashire and led 3-2 after the Bulldogs half of the second inning after an RBI triple from Amato and Monarch error.
King's answered in the bottom half of the second registering nine hits and scoring eight runs to break the game open and take a 10-3 lead.
The Bulldogs immediately got three back in the top of the third inning on three walks and a King's error to pull within four runs (10-6).
From there the bats went silent as King's added one run in the bottom of the sixth and DeSales got two tallies in the top of the seventh on a two-run home run from Epsaro but left the tying run at the plate as the Monarchs salavaged a game two win.
Sophomore
Felix Martinez Jr. took the loss allowing seven runs and seven hits 1 1/3 innings. Amato finished with two hits and two RBIs, Lancashire was 2-for-2 with an RBIs, and Epsaro finished with two runs scored and three RBIs.
The Bulldogs are back in action tomorrow when they wrap up the three-game set at King's with first pitch set for 3:30 pm.
