Kylie Honnick-Payne (Johnson City, NY) scored twice including the game-winner with 5:44 left to play lifting the DeSales University field hockey team past Delaware Valley University, 3-2, in the MAC Freedom opener for both teams on Saturday evening.
DSU (6-2) has now equaled its win total from last season in just eight games and opens the conference season 1-0 for the first time since the 2014 season.
Freshman
Erin Chioffe (Jamison, PA) started the scoring on Saturday with her first career goal on a corner off an assist from junior
Chelsea DeFrancisco (Bethlehem, PA) 8:44 into the game. Â The Bulldogs then took a 2-0 lead just 3:17 later when Honnick-Payne scored her first of two off an assist from Chioffe.
The Aggies (4-4, 0-1 MAC Freedom) got both goals back to tie the score before halftime in the 18th and 22nd minute.
The game remained tied in the 65th minute when Honnick-Payne tapped home a pass from DeFrancisco at 64:16 on the post to put DeSales up 3-2 and that turned out to the game-winner.
DSU out-shot DVU, 16-8, and had a decisive 22-6 advantage on corners. Â Sophomore
Katarina Polyviou (Cranford, NJ) made four saves in the cage and senior
Autumn Klucsarits (Danielsville, PA) made a big defensive save in the first-half.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Widener University for a non-conference game beginning at 7:00 pm.
