Center Valley, PA (September 30, 2017) - Sophomore
Kylie Honnick-Payne (Johnson City, NY) scored twice and the DeSales University field hockey team opened the MAC Freedom season with two wins for just the second time in team history with a 2-1 double overtime win over Eastern University on homecoming Saturday afternoon.
Eastern (4-6, 1-1 MAC Freedom) was the first team on the board scoring 9:34 into the game whenÂ
Ali Balmer touched home a pass to the post fromÂ
Shannon Jugler.
DeSales (7-3, 2-0 MAC Freedom) wasted no time tying the score and Honnick-Payne tallied her first of the game and the ninth of the season unassisted just 1:38 later.
The tie score stood into the half and thru the entire second-half as the two teams managed just seven combined shots in the second half.
The Eagles controlled most of the first OT period out-shooting the Bulldogs, 5-0, but sophomore
Katarina Polyviou (Cranford, NJ) came up big with four saves in the first extra session forcing a second overtime.
Just over four minutes into the second extra session sophomore
Madison Brader (Coopersburg, PA) got the ball just inside midfield, fired a pass just above the circle to junior
Chelsea DeFrancisco (Bethlehem, PA) who re-directed a pass to a streaking Honnick-Payne who touched a shot past a charging Eagle keeper for the win.
Eastern out-shot DeSales, 21-7, for the game and had a 16-6 advantage in penalty corners for the game.
Polyvious was sensational making 12 saves in the win in between the pipes.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Tuesday when they host Drew University in a non-conference game beginning at 6:00 pm.
