Women's Basketball Falls 74-73 at Sage on Last Second Putback

Troy, NY (December 1, 2018) - The DeSales University women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker on the road as the Sage Colleges hit a put-back jumper with 11 seconds left to earn a 74-73 win over the Bulldogs in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.

The Basics
  • Final Score: Sage - 74, DeSales - 73

How it Happened
  • DeSales was quick out of the gates scoring the first eight points of the game before Sage settled in and scored the next 11 points to take an 11-8 lead and led by five (19-14) after one quarter.
  • The Gators increased its lead to as many as 13 (40-27) late in the second quarter before the Bulldogs closed the half on a 10-2 run, thanks to eight points from senior Leandra Sterner, to pull within five points (42-37) at the break.
  • DSU kept chipping away at the lead in the third quarter but was never able to get over the hump as Sage increased its lead to eight points after three (56-48).
  • Trailing 64-57 at the 7:02 mark DeSales used a 10-2 run to take its first lead of the second-half on a three from Sterner with 3:02 to go.
  • Sage answered with a three on the other end but out of a timeout freshman Rylie Rittenhouse came up big with a a three-point play at the 2:07 mark to reclaim a one-point lead (68-67).
  • After three missed shots by the Gators and a missed layup from Sage, Emily Parslow hit a three-pointer with 41 ticks left to put SC up two (72-70).
  • Out of another timeout, RIttenhouse again came up big with a three at the top of the key to put the Bulldogs back up one (73-72) with 26 seconds left.
  • After a Sage timeout, Parslow was short on a jumper at the top of the key but corralled the rebound and her putback in the lane bounced in giving the Gators a one-point edge and after the ball was knocked away with 2.6 seconds left a last second contested short jumper from freshman Averi Jordan rimmed out as time expired.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Sterner returned from a one-game absence with an ankle injury to score a game-high 22 points on 9-of-17 shooting and added three steals.
  • Freshman Samantha Shinkus added 11 points and three steals and Rittenhouse came off the bench to tally 11 points and pull down four rebounds.
  • Senior Morgan Birmelin finished with eight points and handed out 11 assists, while senior Bridget Walsh finished with nine points and nine boards to go along with three blocks.
For the Foes
  • Megan Flynn finished with a double-double (20 points, 11 rebounds) and Parslow totaled 19 points.
  • Tanisha Edge came off the bench to score 16 points and hand out nine assists.
Inside the Box Score
  • The Bulldogs were hurt on the boards, out-rebounded, 53-35, for the game, including 18 offensive boards for the Gators leading to 17 second chance points.
  • DSU forced 28 turnovers leading 24 points.
  • The Bulldogs shot 38.7 percent from the field and hit just 7-of-12 from the free throw line.
