Women’s Hoops Ready to Battle FDU-Florham in MAC Freedom Championship

Center Valley, PA (February 23, 2018) – For the third straight year and fourth time in the last five years the DeSales University women's basketball team will take on FDU-Florham in the MAC Freedom championship game on Saturday at 1:00 pm at FDU.
 
The Bulldogs (16-10) earned the spot in the title game with a dominating 64-44 win over King's College in the MAC Freedom semifinals, while the top seeded Devils (20-6) discarded Misericordia University with a big fourth quarter on Wednesday evening.

DeSales/FDU-Florham History:
Saturday's game will be the 50th career meeting between the two teams with DeSales holding a 34-15 lead in the all-time series after splitting the two games this season with the home team winning each time.  It will the fifth career meeting in the MAC Freedom postseason with the Devils owning a 3-1 edge in the previous four games.  DeSales is 16-8 all-time at the Ferguson Recreation Center.
 
Regular Season Series
Game One at DeSales (DSU – 82-74)
The Bulldogs never trailed in this one scoring the first 11 points of the game and never looked back in the win in Billera Hall.  Junior Leandra Sterner led four players in double digits with 24 points, while junior Bridget Walsh tallied a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.  Senior Kaitlin Kelly had 13 points and sophomore Molly Jansco totaled 11 points.  Junior Morgan Birmelin had a season-high 12 helpers in the win.  Kendrea Williams led the Devils with a game-high 31 points.
 
Game Two at FDU (FDU – 72-60)
DeSales started quickly yet again leading by five after one quarter and holding a slim one-point advantage at the half but a strong third quarter that saw the Devils out-score DSU, 25-12, gave FDU a 12-point lead and they never looked back in the fourth.  Birmelin had a team-high 21 point and Sterner added 19 in the loss.  Gabrielle Harris and Bria Smith combined to score 48 of FDU's 72 points.
 
DeSales in the MAC Freedom Postseason:
DeSales is making its 21st straight MAC Freedom Tournament appearance.  DSU joined the MAC Freedom at the start of the 1997-98 season and hasn't missed the post-season.  The Bulldogs have won six conference titles and are 22-14 all-time in the MAC Freedom postseason.  Saturday's appearance in the championship game will be DSU's 14th.
