Dallas, PA (April 13, 2018) - The DeSales University baseball team erased an early 6-1 deficit to come all the way back for a 9-8 win in 10 innings in the first of three games with Misericordia University on Friday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (16-11, 10-2 MAC Freedom) fell behind early as the Cougars (18-8, 10-3 MAC Freedom) scored twice in the first inning and four more times in the third inning chasing senior
Adam Donovan to take a 6-1 lead.
DSU wasted no time climbing back into the game scoring three runs in the fourth inning on an RBI double from senior
Conner Lafferty, an RBI groundout from freshman
Sean Hanczaryk, and an RBI single from junior
Tommy Epsaro.
DeSales got one more tally in the fifth as junior
Charlie Barebo doubled and scored after stealing third base and the catcher's throw went into left field to make it a 7-5 game after MU scored once in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Trailing 8-5 into the seventh inning, the Bulldogs again took advantage of a Cougar miscue to plate a run and Barebo finished off the comeback tying the game at eight in the top of the eighth inning with a two-run home run.
After neither team scored in the ninth, junior
Preston Amato singled with one out in the 10th inning and eventually scored after three walks issued by the Cougar pitching staff giving DSU a 9-8 advantage.
That run was all senior
Konner Schneider needed as he worked around a lead-off single to easily retire the next three batters to earn his fourth win of the season. Schneider was outstanding in relief pitching three strong innings allowing just two hits and striking out two.
Amato had a great day at the plate finishing 4-for-5 with two runs scored, while Barebo, sophomore
Sergio Diaz, Hanczaryk, Epsaro, and freshman
Cody Mish all had two hits as part of a 16-hit attack in the win.
The Bulldog bullpen led by Schneider that also featured sophomore
Ryan Passaro and junior
Austin Kroeger combined to allow just three runs over eight innings, striking out three and walking just one.
DSU is back to the diamond tomorrow when they host Misericordia University in the final two games of the weekend series at Butz Field beginning at 1:00 pm.
