Softball Sweeps Delaware Valley to Clinch Spot in MAC Freedom Postseason

Doylestown, PA (April 21, 2018) - The DeSales University softball team swept two games at Delaware Valley University on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon by scores of 8-1 and 10-6, to clinch a spot in the MAC Freedom postseason tournament in two weeks.

It marks the 10th time the Bulldogs have earned a spot in the MAC Freedom Tournament and it is the first since the 2015 season when DeSales won its last MAC Freedom championship.

Game One (W/8-1)
Senior Hailey Warner became the fifth player to record 200 career strikeouts pitching seven solid innings allowing just six hits and one run, striking out 10 to improve to 8-2 on the season.

The offense did the rest as DSU scored three times in both the first and second innings to open up a 6-0 lead and never looked back.  Freshman Ciarrah Holmqvist had an RBI single in the first, while freshman Riley Kerr and sophomore Alexa Marasheski each had RBI hits in the second inning.

DeSales added another run in the third on another RBI single from Kerr before each team traded runs in the seventh inning.

Kerr finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs, sophomore Erin Redden had two hits and scored three times, and Holmqvist had two hits in the game one win.

Game Two (W/10-6)
DVU took a 1-0 first inning lead before DeSales plated four in the top of the third inning to lead 4-1.  Junior Carly Benjamin had the big blow, a grand slam to give DSU the early lead.

The Aggies responded with five runs in the bottom half of the third to lead 6-4 before DSU tied the game at six with runs in the fifth and sixth innings on an RBI double from freshman Hallie Muffley and RBI single from Marasheski.

Tied entering the seventh inning, the Bulldogs scored four times thanks to two wild pitches, an Aggie error, and an RBI ground out from Marasheski to take a commanding lead needing just three outs.

Freshman Julia Testagrose was able to retire the side without any damage in the seventh to preserve the win for herself.  Testagrose pitched five strong innings of relief allowing just three hits and striking out four.

Redden had three more hits and scored twice, while Marasheski, Holmqvist, and Muffley each had two hits.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to return to action on Thursday when they travel to Montclair State University for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
