Softball Records Third Straight MAC Freedom Sweep; Takes Two from Manhattanville

Center Valley, PA (April 7, 2018) - The DeSales University softball team earned its third straight sweep of a MAC Freedom opponent taking two from Manhattanville College, 7-4 and 6-5, on a chilly Saturday afternoon.

Game One (W/7-4)
The Bulldogs scored twice in the first inning as freshman Ciarrah Holmqvist and junior Carly Benjamin each had RBIs.  DSU added a solo run in the third on a second RBI single from Benjamin.

DeSales continued to lead 3-0 into the sixth inning when Manhattanville scored three times to tie the game.  The Bulldogs wasted no time reclaiming the lead scoring four times in the bottom of the inning taking advantage of a Valiant error and getting a two-out, two-RBI single from Benjamin.

MVC got one run back in the seventh providing the final tally.

Benjamin finished 4-for-4 with four RBIs and freshman Riley Kerr finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored.  Sophomore Shannon Hill earned the win in relief last 1 2/3 innings allowing one run.  Senior Hailey Warner pitched 5 1/3 strong frames, striking out 11.

Game Two (W/6-5)
The Valiants took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning but the Bulldogs took control in the bottom half scoring four times on a two-RBI double from freshman Hallie Muffley and a two-run home run from sophomoe Leann Panconi.

MVC scored once in the fifth and twice in the sixth to the game at four but DeSales got two in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-4 lead as freshman Caitlyn Newsom scored on a wild pitch and sophomore Madison Sias had a pinch-hit RBI single.

Manhattanville got one run back in the top of the seventh before Warner left the bases loaded preserving the one-run win.

Sophomore Emma Izzo had two hits, Benjamin finished 3-for-3, and Muffley went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs.  Panconi finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

Warner earned the win with 1 1/3 innings of relief allowing just one run.  Senior Andrea Artesani tossed four strong innings allowing two runs on six hits.

The Bulldogs return to action on Thursday when they travel to Kean University for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
