Second-Half Spurt Leads Men's Basketball Past Misericordia, 73-70

Dallas, PA (January 26, 2019) - The DeSales University men's basketball team erased a 14-point second-half deficit on the road to earn a hard fought 73-70 win over Misericordia University in MAC Freedom action on Monday evening.

The Basics
  • Final Score: DeSales - 73, Misericordia - 70
  • Records: DeSales (14-5, 7-1 Conf.); Misericordia (11-8, 4-4 Conf.)
How it Happened
  • DeSales led for most of the first-half before the Cougars finished the half on a 14-5 run to take a 39-35 lead into the halftime locker room.
  • Misericordia continued to take control out of the locker room opening the half on a 13-3 run to take a 14-point lead and led 54-42 with 15:21 left before the Bulldogs rallied.
  • DSU came out of a timeout down 12 and in a full court press that frustrated the Cougars and led the Bulldogs on a 23-8 run over the span of 8:30 giving DeSales a 65-62 lead with 6:33 left to play.
  • Sophomore Matt Kachelries had seven points and freshman Keba Mitchell added six points during the run.
  • The game went back-and-forth over the next few minutes and was tied at 70 after one Jason Kenny free throw with 1:32 to go.
  • After a missed three from junior Alex House, fellow junior Julian Wing made an incredible play on the rebound, jumping on a loose ball inches from the sideline and calling timeout to preserve a second possession for the Bulldogs.
  • Senior Luke Connaghan was fouled going to the rim and hit one freebie and after a defensive stop on the other end, Wing scored with 41 seconds left give the Bulldogs a 73-70 lead.
  • DSU got another defensive stop and Kachelries was fouled but he missed the front end of a one and one as the Cougars called timeout with possession and 17.9 seconds left.
  • Out of the timeout, Kenny took an off balance desparation three with two men on him with six seconds left and after the offensive board bounced around, time ran out on the Cougars giving DeSales the road win.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Kachelries led DeSales with a team-high 18 points and added eight rebounds and four assists.
  • House scored a season-high tying 16 points and Connaghan added 12 points.
  • Wing finished with nine points and six assists.
  • Mitchell played well of the bench with nine points and six rebounds.
For the Foes
  • Noah Rivera had a big game recording a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Kenny finished with 19 points, five assists, and five steals.
  • Tony Harding added 16 points and eight boards.
Inside the Box Score
  • DeSales shot 49.1 percent from the field and held the Cougars to just 41.0 percent shooting.
  • After committing 12 first-half turnovers, DSU did a much better job taking care of the ball in the second-half with just six miscues.
  • The Bulldogs bench out-scored Misericordia's 16-2.
