Field Hockey Snaps Losing Skid with 3-2 Win over Gwynedd-Mercy

Center Valley, PA (October 1, 2019) - The DeSales University field hockey team opened the month of October with a win defeating Gwynedd-Mercy University, 3-2, in non-conference action on Tuesday evening.

The Basics
  • Final Score: DeSales - 3, Gwynedd-Mercy - 2
  • Records: DeSales (4-7); Gwynedd-Mercy (6-5)
  • The win moves head coach Lindsay Goeller into a tie on the all-time wins list at DeSales with 36, tying Jayne Longacre.  One more win will move Goeller into first place all-time all by herself.
How it Happened
  • GMU was first on the scoreboard just 6:26 into the game but the Bulldogs needed just 1:57 to tie the score at one as freshman Tyra Wingle tipped home her seventh goal of the season at 8:23.
  • The game remained tied at one into the half and thru the third quarter as DeSales controlled the flow of play.
  • Just 54 seconds into the final quarter DSU took the lead for good as freshman Catie McGrath scored off a saved rebound and sophomore Olivia Witmer got a very important insurance goal at 53:41 on a shot just inside the far post from the top of the circle.
  • The Griffins added a final tally with five minutes left but never threatened the rest of the way.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Wingle and McGrath each tallied its seventh goals of the season, while Witmer scored her first.
  • Junior Hannah Williams had an assist on Wingle's goal.
  • Senior Katarina Polyviou made four saves in goal.
For the Foes
  • Caitlyn Thornton and Allison Campbell had GMU's goals.
  • Southern Lehigh HS graduate, Lauren Jani, had an assist on the Griffins first goal.
  • Abi Kennedy made three saves in the cage.
Inside the Box Score
  • DeSales had a 15-9 advantage in shots as both teams put six shots on goal.
  • DSU had a healthy 14-5 advantage in penalty corners.
