Volleyball Takes Down Misericordia, 3-1

Center Valley, PA (October 16, 2019) - The DeSales University volleyball moved into a tie for third place in the MAC Freedom standings with a 3-1 win over Misericordia University in MAC Freedom action on Wednesday evening in Billera Hall.

The Basics
  • Final Score: DeSales - 3, Misericordia - 1 (25-15, 21-25, 27-25, 25-22)
  • Records: DeSales (11-14, 3-2 MAC Freedom); Misericordia (15-12, 2-3 MAC Freedom)
  • The win moves DeSales into a third place tie with King's College in the MAC Freedom standings with two matches left to play in the regular season.
How it Happened
  • The Bulldogs led almost the entire first set winning easily 25-15.
  • Misericordia took an early lead in the second set and then held off a few DSU rallies in the middle of the set as the second set featured eight ties to win 25-21.
  • The third set saw the Cougars once again get off to a quick start before the Bulldogs took control in the middle of the set.  Eight ties and five lead changes later, DSU led 24-22, before three straight points by the Cougars gave MU a set point, but DSU scored three straight of its own to take a 27-25 third set win.
  • The fourth set featured nine ties and five more lead changes.  Tied at 22 late, senior Taylor Aron served out three straight points to give the Bulldogs the win.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Sophomore Audrey Wolfe was outstanding in the win finished with six kills on eight attempts, 38 assists, six digs, and four blocks.
  • Junior Grace Merritt had 14 kills and hit .367, while freshman Diane Pugay and senior Morghan Shoemaker each had 10 kills.
  • Shoemaker added five blocks and freshman Caroline Garretson was efficient with seven kills and no errors on 12 attempts for a .583 hitting percentage.
  • Sophomore Georgia Traynor finished with 15 digs and senior Cristal Fernandez added 14 digs.
  • Freshman McKenzie Brady had four aces.
For the Foes
  • Faith Merritt led the Cougars with 11 kills and added nine digs.
  • Amanda Curcio totaled nine kills and five blocks.
  • Karley May handed out 38 assists and Mikayla Gunkle finished with 10 digs.
Inside the Box Score
  • DeSales had nine service aces in the win, while Misericordia committed 12 service errors.
  • DSU hit .184 for the match as compared to .174 for the Cougars.

  • The Bulldogs are back in action next week when they travel to Wilkes University for another important MAC Freedom match beginning at 7:00 pm on Tuesday evening.
