Field Hockey Wins Eighth Straight; Clinches Playoff Spot in 2-1 Win over Misericordia

Center Valley, PA (October 26, 2019) - The DeSales University field hockey team won its eighth straight game, 2-1, over Misericordia University clinching a spot in the MAC Freedom postseason tournament in two weeks on Saturday afternoon.

The Basics
  • Final Score: DeSales - 2, Misericordia - 1
  • Records: DeSales (11-7, 5-1 MAC Freedom); Misericordia (8-10, 2-4 MAC Freedom)
  • The win not only clinches a spot in the postseason but also clinches the #2 seed for the Bulldogs and a home game in the semifinals in two weeks.
  • The eight-game winning streak breaks the previous team record of seven straight set during the end of the '04 and start of the '05 season.
How it Happened
  • DeSales got on the board first when freshman Allie Ball flicked home a loose ball in front of the goalie mid-way thru the first quarter.
  • The Cougars scored 1:13 later when a ball outside the circle hit the post, caromed back out in front of the goal and Sonialys Badillo scored unassisted.
  • The game-winner came with 0.7 seconds left in the third quarter when freshman Tyra Wingle took a pass outside the circle, beat a Cougar defender, and flicked a back-handed shot past the charging GK that kicked off the post and into the cage.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Ball's marker was her fourth of the year and Wingle's game-winner was her 11th of the season.
  • Senior Katarina Polyviou made two saves in goal.
Foe the Foes
  • Katelyn Campbell had six saves in goal for the Cougars.
Inside the Box Score
  • DeSales dominated the shots, out-shooting MU, 24-5.  The Cougars had just one shot after the first quarter.
  • DSU also had a 17-4 advantage in corner kicks.
