#13 Women's Basketball Opens Season with 69-47 Win at Arcadia

Glenside, PA (November 12, 2019) - The #13 DeSales University women's basketball team opened its 2019-20 season with a 69-47 win over Arcadia University in non-conference action on Tuesday evening.

The Basics
  • Final Score: #13 DeSales - 69, Arcadia - 47
  • Records: DeSales (1-0); Arcadia (0-1)
How it Happened
  • Down 4-0 early, DeSales used a 12-2 run started by a three from freshman Maria Newsome to take control early.
  • The lead was nine points (19-10) after one quarter but the Knights started the second quarter strong cutting the lead margin down to two points twice before Newsome once again started a 16-3 run to end the second quarter giving DSU a 37-22 halftime lead.
  • The third quarter was back-and-forth and saw DSU extend its advantage by one point and swell to as many as 28 points in the fourth before the final tally was posted.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Sophomore Samantha Shinkus led all scorers with a game-high 14 points and added six rebounds and four assists.
  • Newsome finished with 13 points in her collegiate debut and senior Molly Jansco was in double digits with 10 points and added three blocks.
  • Sophomore Averi Jordan finished with nine points and four steals.
For the Foes
  • Taylor Dunn had a team-high 13 points.
  • Taylor Fritz finished one point shy of a double-double with nine points and 12 rebounds.
  • Julia Makowski had 10 points.
Inside the Box Score
  • DeSales forced 30 Knight turnovers leading to 21 Bulldog points.
  • The Bulldogs also owned the paint out-scoring Arcadia, 38-16, inside the lane.
Up Next
  • DSU travel to Lebanon Valley College this weekend and will take on Salisbury University in the tournament opener on Saturday night at 7:00 pm.
