Women's Soccer Season Ends in Shootout Loss to Alfred in ECAC First Round

Box Score Center Valley, PA (November 16, 2019) - The DeSales University women's soccer team saw its season come to an end suffering a shootout loss on the 10th shot of the shootout after earning a 1-1 draw with Alfred University in the opening round of the ECAC Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The Basics
  • Final Score: DeSales - 1, Alfred - 1 (2 OT); Alfred advances on PK's, 9-8
  • Records: DeSales (13-5-2 overall); Alfred (8-6-5)
How it Happened
  • Alfred struck first scoring the game's first goal at 5:28 when Natalie O'Brien took control of a failed clear and beat the DSU GK to the left.
  • It remained a one-goal lead for the Saxons into the 57th minute when freshman Meghan Foley scored on a blast just inside the box inside the left post.
  • The game advanced into OT where neither team found the back of the net and went to PK's to decide on the team to advance.
  • After the first five shots, DSU had one shot saved by the AU keeper and AU sent one shot high as both teams scored four times.
  • The next four shots saw each team score as the PK round was tied at eight thru nine shots.
  • On the 10th shot, the Saxon keeper guessed right and made a diving save and Alfred's Angela Gonzalez scored to advance AU into the second round.

  • Foley's goal was her third of the season.
  • Sophomore Gabby Torchia garnered an assist on the play.
  • Junior Lia Gaccione made one save in goal.

  • Hannah Fuller made one save in regulation in goal.
