Defense Carries #10/13 Women's Basketball past Muhlenberg, 64-52

Center Valley, PA (November 20, 2019) - Three players recorded double-doubles and the DeSales University women's basketball team held Muhlenberg College to just 28.1 percent shooting leading the #10/13 Bulldogs to a 64-52 win in the 2019-20 home opener in Billera Hall on Wednesday evening.

The Basics
  • Final Score: DeSales - 64, Muhlenberg - 52
  • Records: DeSales (4-0); Muhlenberg (1-2)
  • It is DSU's second straight win in the series and moves the Bulldogs to 30-19 all-time vs. the Mules.
  • DeSales is now ranked #10 in the WBCA Top 25 poll and #13 in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll.
How it Happened
  • DeSales was quick out of the gates opening up an 11-1 lead over the first three minutes of the game as junior Isabel Caruso and sophomores Samantha Shinkus and Averi Jordan all knocked down 3's.
  • It was still a 10-point game (13-3) when the Mules finished the quarter on a 11-4 run to pull within three (17-14).
  • MC continued to have control early in the second quarter opening up a four-point advantage twice before the Bulldogs closed the half with two buckets to tie the game at 26 as both teams entered the locker room.
  • DeSales caught fire in the third quarter scoring 21 points, leading throughout, and building a nine-point advantage on a steal and layup from freshman Megan Bealer.
  • The lead was 11 after a trey from junior Emma Stanfield early in the fourth quarter when Muhlenberg slowly cut the gap down to five points several times.
  • It remained a five-point game after a Mule layup with 49 seconds left but forced to foul, DeSales iced the win from the line canning 7-of-8 over the final 22 seconds to stay unbeaten.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Jordan led the trio of double-doubles with team-highs of 17 points and 15 boards.
  • Senior Molly Jansco recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 10 rebounds.
  • Shinkus also had a DD with 10 points and 13 caroms.
  • Freshman Maria Newsome totaled seven points and a team-high five dimes, while Stanfield and sophomore Rylie Rittenhouse each came off the bench to net seven points.
For the Foes
  • The Mules got a team-high 13 points from Jaelyn Swann.
Inside the Box Score
  • Muhlenberg had out-rebounded its first two opponents by an average of 12.0 rebounds per game but the Bulldogs dominated the glass on Wednesday out-rebounding MC, 51-41, including 20 offensive boards that led to 21 second chance points.
  • DSU also did a tremendous job from the free throw line hitting 22-for-27 (81.5%).

  • DeSales is off this weekend and will return to action on Tuesday, November 26th when they host its other local rival, Moravian College, in Billera Hall beginning at 6:00 pm.
