#8 Women's Basketball Races Past Gwynedd-Mercy, 104-66

Gwynedd-Valley, PA (December 7, 2019) - The 8th ranked DeSales University women's basketball team scored 45 fast break points and shot 50 percent from the field in a 104-66 win over Gwynedd-Mercy University in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.

The Basics
  • Final Score: DeSales - 104; Gwynedd-Mercy - 66
  • Records: DeSales (6-1); Gwynedd-Mercy (2-7)
  • The win moves DeSales to 31-2 all-time vs. the Griffins.
How it Happened
  • DSU scored on its very first possession and had very little trouble handling Gwynedd-Mercy's pressing and trapping style of defense as it never trailed and opened the game with a 13-2 run to take an early lead.
  • The Griffins got within seven near the end of the first quarter before DeSales finished the opening 10 minutes on a 9-3 run to lead 28-15.
  • A 7-0 run midway thru the second quarter gave the Bulldogs its largest advantage to that point (20 points) at 42-22 before entering the locker room with a 51-33 lead.
  • DeSales blew the game open in the third quarter out-scoring GMU, 34-14, to lead by as many as 38 points (85-47) after three quarters of play before cruising home in the final quarter.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Sophomore Samantha Shinkus stuffed the stat sheet finishing with 19 points, nine assists, five rebounds, and six steals.
  • Fellow sophomore Averi Jordan had a game-high 26 points and pulled down six rebounds.
  • Senior Molly Jansco and freshman Maria Newsome each had 12 points and sophomore Emma Stanfield came off the bench to tally 11 points and pull down seven rebounds.
  • Sophomore Rylie Rittenhouse finished with seven points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
  • Junior Isabel Caruso added eight points, six rebounds, five assists, and five steals in the win.
For the Foes
  • Shannon Carroll and Tamia Wessels had a team-high 11 points.
  • Cayla Sharky finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Inside the Box Score
  • DeSales shot 50 percent (39-for-78) from the field and scored 62 of its 104 points in the paint.
  • DSU forced 34 Griffin turnovers leading to 41 points.
  • The Bulldogs also out-rebounded the Griffins, 58-52.
