Late Rally Falls Short in 81-76 Loss for Men's Basketball at Old Westbury

Old Westbury, NY (December 7, 2019) - The DeSales University men's basketball team used a late 8-0 rally to get within four but was unable to climb all the way back falling at Old Westbury, 81-76, in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.

The Basics

How it Happened
  • DeSales was in control early taking a 6-2 lead at the start, led by as many as seven points twice, and was in front for all but a few moments over the first 14 minutes before Old Westbury took control.
  • DSU led 26-24 at the 6:20 mark when Old Westbury used a 15-0 run to take a 39-26 lead and continued to lead by 13 (43-30) at the halftime break.
  • The Bulldogs were unable to cut into the lead over the first 16 minutes of the second half and trailed by as many as 19 points before making a run.
  • Down by 12 (71-59) with 3:58 left, junior Mike Bealer hit back-to-back three-pointers starting a quick 8-0 run that was capped by a layup from junior Matt Kachelries with 2:07 to go.
  • After a stop on the other end, DSU had a chance to make it a one-possession game and got a good look on a 3 in the corner from senior Alex House that hit back iron and Old Westbury clinched the win with two free throws and a couple of buckets down the stretch.
Top Bulldogs Performers
  • Kachelries led DeSales with 15 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists in the loss.
  • Senior Kweku Dawson-Amoah had 14 points in just 16 minutes of action fighting foul trouble all game.
  • Senior Ben Pratt and Bealer each had 11 points.
  • House finished with 10 points, five boards, and three blocks.
  • Senior Julian Wing played well off the bench with nine points, eight rebounds, and five assists.
For the Foes
  • Justin Alleyne-Washington led all scorers with 31 points.
  • Pedro Marquez added 16 points as the only two double digit scorers for Old Westbury.
Inside the Box Score
  • DSU hit just 40.6 percent from the field for the game and was 6-for-25 from three-point land.
  • The Bulldogs dominated the paint, out-rebounding Old Westbury, 53-40, and out-scoring OW, 50-26, in the paint.
  • Old Westbury was 26-for-34 from the four line as compared to just 8-for-17 for the Bulldogs.
