Justin Monaghan scored on a rocket from the left wing 50 seconds into the second overtime lifting the DeSales University men's lacrosse team past Montclair State University, 14-13, in the season opener for both teams on Friday evening.

How it Happened
- The Bulldogs stormed out of the gates in this one scoring seven goals in the first 7:40 of the game to take a 7-0 lead as sophomore Zach Bowen led the way with five of the seven tallies.
- The Red Hawks turned the momentum, taking advantage of a few Bulldogs mistakes to score five straight goals before DSU scored with 1:47 left to take an 8-5 first quarter lead.
- The second quarter was much more defensive as each team scored twice giving DeSales a 10-7 halftime lead.
- The third quarter was a carbon copy of the second with teach team scoring twice as the Bulldogs clung to a three-goal advantage heading into the final 15 minutes.
- MSU pulled within one goal at the 11:53 mark but DeSales regained a two-goal advantage (13-11) with 11:02 remaining.
- The Red Hawks got within with just over minutes left but DSU held that one goal lead inside one minute in the game.
- After a Bulldog shot hit the post, resetting the shot clock, DeSales was whistled for an illegal pick giving Montclair State the ball on the ground ball pickup.
- The Red Hawks called timeout and with 52 ticks on the clock were able to tie the game for the first time since it was 0-0 as the game headed into overtime.
- Neither team was able to get a shot off in the first overtime period.
- DeSales won the face-off to start the second OT and 50 seconds into the second extra period, junior Matt Brown found Monaghan on the left wing and he rifled a shot into the upper corner of the net to give DeSales the season opening win.
Top Bulldog Performers
- Bowen was outstanding at the start scoring six goals, five in the first 7:40 of the game.
- Senior Joe Neggia finished with three goals and one assist and Monaghan added three goals.
- Freshman Tom Connors had two goals.
- Brown and freshman Sean Wiser each had two assists, while junior Frank Krug, freshman Kai Taylor, sophomore Matt Motto, and sophomore Dylan Valinchus each had assists.
- Krug finished with a team-high seven ground balls and caused three turnovers.
- Sophomore Vince Maria had a team-high four caused turnovers.
- Senior Matt Barry had 14 saves in between the pipes.
For the Foes
- Matt Haemmerle and Jesse James West each had five goals and one assist to lead MSU.
- Dan Bellezza finished with one goal and three assists and Christian Boyle added two goals and an assist.
Inside the Box Score
- Montclair State out-shot DeSales, 50-32, for the game and had a 40-33 advantage in ground balls.
- The Red Hawks turned the ball over 27 times and DeSales committed 25 miscues.
