Volleyball Splits Day Two of Home Invitational; Merritt Earns All-Tournament Honors

Center Valley, PA (August 31, 2019) - Junior Grace Merritt earned All-Tournament team honors leading the DeSales University volleyball team to a split of two matches on Saturday in its home invitational finishing the weekend with a 2-1 record.

Match #1 (L/0-3 vs. Stevenson)
The Bulldogs started strong in the first set vs. the Mustangs leading the entire way until SU made a late charge to steal the match scoring six straight points down 22-18 to take a 24-22 lead before taking the opening set, 25-23.

In the second set, Stevenson led the entire way taking a 13-2 lead early.  Down 24-11, the Bulldogs made it interesting and had the Mustangs on their heels scoring 11 straight points on set point to pull within 24-22 before Stevenson ended the rally to wiin 25-22.

The third set was all Stevenson as they finished off the win, 25-16.

Merritt led the charge with 16 kills, hitting .220.  Senior Morghan Shoemaker finished with nine kills and sophomore Audrey Wolfe had 31 assists.  Freshman McKenzie Brady added 13 digs in the loss.

Match #2 (W/3-0 vs. Rutgers-Camden)
The Bulldogs rebounded from their loss to Stevenson earlier in the day to take home their second match vs. the Scarlet Raptors.  DSU had control in all three sets winning, 25-19, 25-11, and 25-20.

Merritt once again had double digit kills with 10, while Shoemaker added six kills, hitting .316, and three blocks.  Freshman Diane Pugay had eight kills.  Wolfe totaled 31 assists for the second straight match and senior Cristal Fernandez had 20 digs and three aces.

The Bulldogs are back in action on next weekend when they travel to the Connecticut College/Coast Guard Academy Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
