Crunch Time Defense Pushes Women's Basketball past Stevens, 74-68

Hoboken, NJ (January 22, 2020) - The DeSales University women's basketball team held Stevens to just four points over the final 5:58 leading to a 74-68 win over the Ducks in MAC Freedom action on Wednesday evening.

The Basics
  • Final Score: DeSales - 74, Stevens - 68
  • Records: DeSales (12-4, 4-1 MAC Freedom); Stevens (5-11, 2-3 MAC Freedom)
  • DSU is now 9-0 this season when they score 70+ points in a game.
How it Happened
  • Tied at seven early, DSU finished the first quarter on a 13-5 run to take a 20-12 lead.
  • The lead increased to 13 points (27-14) early in the second quarter on a three from sophomore Averi Jordan.
  • Leading by 12 with 3:37 left in the half, SIT finished the half on a 15-5 run to get within two points (36-34) at the half.
  • DSU scored the first seven points of the second-half to take a nine-point advantage.
  • The Bulldog lead was six at the 3:41 mark of the third quarter when the Ducks used a 13-4 run to a three-point lead and led by two (55-53) after three quarters of play.
  • The first four minutes of the final quarter were back and forth as Stevens continued to lead by two (64-62) with 5:58 to go.
  • DeSales held the Ducks scoreless for the next 4:59 as Stevens next basket didn't come till there were 29 seconds left as DSU scored seven straight points to take a 69-64 lead before that basket.
  • The Bulldogs then iced the win from the line hitting 5-of-6 from the stripe over the final 20 seconds.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Jordan finished with 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
  • Sophomore Rylie Rittenhouse had a career-best 19 points, hitting four 3's and also grabbed six rebounds.
  • Freshman Maria Newsome finished with 14 points and sophomore Samantha Shinkus added 10 points.
  • Freshman Megan Bealer also played well finishing with eight points and a season-high 14 rebounds.
For the Foes
  • Jess Broad led all scorers with 26 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
  • Allie Moss had 16 points and handed out six assists.
Inside the Box Score
  • DeSales controlled the glass out-rebounding Stevens, 50-41, and had a 21-6 advantage in second chance points.
  • DSU was 22-for-33 from the free throw line as compared to just 1-for-5 for the Ducks.
