Women's Basketball Hands Misericordia First Conference Loss, 75-46

Center Valley, PA (January 25, 2020) - The DeSales University women's basketball team held Misericordia University to just 26.7 percent shooting en route to a 75-46 convincing win handing the Cougars its first MAC Freedom loss of the season on Saturday afternoon.

The Basics
  • Final Score: DeSales - 75, Misericordia - 46
  • Records: DeSales (13-4, 5-1 MAC Freedom); Misericordia (15-2, 5-1 MAC Freedom)
  • The win is DSU's fifth straight over the Cougars and snaps MU's six-game winning streak entering the game.
How it Happened
  • DeSales was in control from the opening tip scoring the first nine points of the game and holding the Cougars scoreless for the first 5:05.
  • The lead was nine for most of the opening quarter until a three at the buzzer from Erica Haefele cut the margin down to six points.
  • A two-point game early in the second quarter was blown open with a 14-2 run extending the lead up to 14 points as DSU held onto that lead into the halftime locker room (33-19).
  • The lead grew to as many as 23 points (45-22) at the six minute mark of the third quarter before Misericordia cut it to 12 and got within 11 at the 8:02 mark of the third quarter.
  • It was all Bulldogs from there as DeSales finished the game out-scoring MU, 26-8, over the final 7:51 to post the final tally.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Sophomore Averi Jordan led all scorers with 18 points and also grabbed eight rebounds.
  • Freshman Maria Newsome finished with 15 points.
  • Sophomore Samantha Shinkus had 12 points and seven rebounds.
  • Sophomore Rylie Rittenhouse led the bench squad with 10 points and five steals.
For the Foes
  • Jordan Barth was the lone Cougar in double figured with 13 points.
  • Freshman Gianna Delfino finished with five points and 11 rebounds.
Inside the Box Score
  • DeSales held Misericordia to just 26.7 percent shooting from the field, while shooting 45.8 percent.
  • The Bulldogs dominated the glass out-rebounding the Cougars, 50-33.  MU had entered the game out-rebounding the opposition by an average of 15 boards per game.
  • DSU had a 52-20 advantage in points in the paint.
