Fourth Quarter Defense Leads Women's Basketball past Eastern, 59-57

St. David's, PA (January 29, 2020) - The DeSales University women's basketball team held Eastern University to just seven fourth quarter points leading to a come from behind 59-57 win over the Eagles in MAC Freedom action on Wednesday evening.

The Basics
  • Final Score: DeSales - 59, Eastern - 57
  • Records: DeSales (14-4, 6-1 MAC Freedom); Eastern (9-9, 4-3 MAC Freedom)
  • The win moves DeSales in a three-way tie for first place with King's College and Misericordia University after the first-half of the MAC Freedom schedule.
How it Happened
  • DeSales led 5-2 early before Eastern took control extending a two-point lead into a nine-point advantage with a 9-2 run late in the first quarter before the Bulldogs closed the quarter with three straight points.
  • The Eagles led the entire second quarter and by nine points with 2:47 to go in the first-half when the Bulldogs closed the half out-scoring EU, 7-2 to cut the deficit down to four points (30-26) entering the locker room.
  • The margin was just one point mid-way thru the third quarter before Eastern used a 9-2 run to take an eight point lead and led by seven (50-43) after three quarters of play.
  • The Bulldogs turned up the defense at the very start of the fourth quarter holding Eastern scoreless for the 6:09 as they took its first lead since the very beginning stages of the game, 52-50, on lay-up from sophomore Samantha Shinkus.
  • Tied at 52, a jumper from sophomore Emma Stanfield and a short jumper from Shinkus pushed DSU up four points with 3:07 to go.
  • The lead remained four with 1:06 left when the Eagles scored on their next possession and after a stop on the other end, EU was fouled on the defensive rebound but made just 1-of-2, as the Bulldogs led 58-57 with 20 seconds left.
  • Freshman Maria Newsome was fouled with 14 seconds left but just 1-of-2 making it a two-point game as Eastern called timeout with 14 seconds left.
  • Out of the timeout, the Eagles got two looks at a game-winning 3 with the first one well off the mark and the second blocked by Stanfield with three seconds left.
  • On the ensuing inbounds a desparation three from the Eagles was nowhere close as time expired and DSU escaped with the win.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Shinkus finished with a team-high 15 points, all of which came in the second-half.
  • Sophomore Averi Jordan added 13 points and had four steals.
  • Newsome finished with 12 points.
For the Foes
  • Kay Wulah finished with a double-double totaling 17 points and 15 rebounds and added six blocks.
  • Viki Kneis added 15 points and Da'Naziah Brown added 10 tallies.
Inside the Box Score
  • DSU held Eastern to just seven fourth quarter points and 1-for-14 shooting from the field in the final quarter.
  • After struggling from the field in the first-half, the Bulldogs hit 13-for-28 (46.4%) in the second-half.
