#9/10 DeSales Second-Half Comeback Falls Short at Cabrini in 69-62 Loss

Radnor, PA (January 4, 2020) - The #9/10 DeSales University women's basketball team allowed 44 first-half points and were unable to overcome a 17-point halftime deficit in a 69-62 loss at Cabrini University in the final non-conference game of the season on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened
  • DSU got off to a good start opening up a 5-2 lead after a 3 from junior Isabel Caruso, but Cabrini immediately took command using a 12-0 run to take a 14-5 lead that was stopped by a triple from sophomore Averi Jordan at the 3:48 mark of the first quarter.
  • The Bulldogs continued to trail by six after one quarter and got within four points twice in the second quarter before the Cavaliers finished the half on a 15-4 run to take a 44-27 advantage into the locker room.
  • Cabrini hit 6-for-15 from outside the arc and dominated the glass out-rebounding DSU, 25-17, in the first half and out-scoring them 14-2 in second chance points.  CU also scored 16 points off 10 DeSales turnovers over the first 20 minutes.
  • The third quarter was all Bulldogs as the clawed their way back into the game holdoing Cabrini to just six points to close within six points (47-41) late in the quarter before trailing by nine at the quarter's buzzer.
  • DSU forced 11 third quarter turnovers to get back into the game.
  • After two free throws from freshman Maria Newsome pulling DSU within seven, Cabrini scored eight straight to take a 15-point lead (58-43).
  • The Bulldogs answered with five straight points and got to within five points (60-55) with 2:31 left to play on four straight points from sophomore Rylie Rittenhouse.
  • Cabrini hit two freebies on the next possession and iced the win after a bucket from senior Molly Jansco with 1:46 to go as the Bulldogs were unable to get any closer than six the rest of the way.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Jansco continued her strong play totaling 21 points, adding nine rebounds, and blocking five shots.
  • Jordan added 12 points and pulled down five boards.
  • Newsome and Rittenhouse each had eight points.
For the Foes
  • Cabrini got nearly all its production from two players as Kate Lannon had 21 points and eight rebounds and Ashley Tutzauer finished with 20 points and nine boards.
  • Cassidy Gallagher had nine points.
Inside the Box Score
  • Cabrini shot 17-for-35 (48.6%) in the first-half but just 5-for-23 (21.7%) in the second-half as DeSales played much better second-half defense.
  • The Bulldogs were just 3-for-20 (15.0%) from outside the arc.

  • The focus changes now as the Bulldogs remaining 14 games are all MAC Freedom games with the first coming on Wednesday when DSU hosts FDU-Florham with game time for the women's game set for 8:00 pm.
