Big Second Quarter Lifts Men's Lacrosse Past Messiah, 12-9

Center Valley, PA (Feb. 22, 2020) - The DeSales University men's lacrosse team scored five unanswered goals in the second quarter and held on late to win its 12th straight game at home, 12-9, over Messiah College in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.

  • The win is DSU's 12th straight at home dating back to last season when DeSales went a perfect 8-0 at home and won its final two games of the 2018 season at home.
How it Happened
  • The Bulldogs scored the first three goals of the game but the Falcons answered with three straight goals over the final 2:14 of the first quarter to tie the game at three.
  • DSU dominated the second-quarter scoring all five goals in the period to take an 8-3 lead at the break.
  • The run was extended to seven straight goals after DeSales scored the first two of the third quarter to take a 10-3 lead.
  • The Bulldogs led by seven (11-4) when Messiah scored three straight to get withing four goals but another tally from sophomore Matt Connors pushed the lead back to five and DeSales never looked back from there.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Junior Matt Brown led the way with three goals and two assist for five points.
  • Junior Zach Bowen and Connors also scored three times and Connors added one assist.
  • Senior Justin Monaghan had one goal and two assists and junior Matt Motto had one goal and one assist.
  • Sophomores Chase Yoder (goal) and Kai Taylor (assist) rounded out the scoring.
  • Senior Frank Krug led both team with 11 ground balls and added four caused turnovers.
  • Yoder won 16-of-22 face-offs and junior Dylan Valinchus added six ground balls.
  • Senior Vincent Groelly made seven saves in goal.
For the Foes
  • Hunter Bellows had three goals and an assist and Garrett Amsbaugh finished with three goals.
  • Liam Lilienthal had six points with two goals and four assists.
  • Sam Stone added one goal and one helper.
  • Evan Stoker made 11 saves in goal.
Inside the Box Score
  • Messiah out-shot DeSales, 42-34, but the Bulldogs had a 23-16 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Bulldogs won 16-of-24 face-offs and held a 41-33 lead in ground balls.
