Baseball Earns Split with Stevens in MAC Freedom Semifinals; Game Three Tomorrow

Center Valley, PA (May 9, 2021) - Stevens Institute of Technology hit a game-winning two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning of game one and the DeSales University baseball team rallied down three runs in game two splitting games one and two of the MAC Freedom Semifinal series at Weiland Park on a rainy Sunday afternoon.

These two teams will play a winner take all game three tomorrow at Stevens with game time set for 6:00 pm.  The winner advances to the MAC Freedom Championship three-game series set for next weekend vs. Misericordia University who defeated Arcadia University, 2-0, in the other MAC Freedom semifinal on Saturday.

Game One (L/5-6)
DeSales took a 3-0 lead in the first inning in this one on an RBI single from sophomore Colin Trembley and two-RBI double from junior Billy Scanlon.

The Ducks tied the game in the top of the third as the Bulldogs made three errors leading to three unearned runs and Stevens took the lead in the fourth on a solo home run.

DSU quickly tied the game with a solo run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from junior Liam Kile and took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double from Trembley.

Senior John Poccia stranded a two-out base-runner in the bottom of the eighth as DSU clung to a one-run lead entering the ninth.

After a leadoff single, the Ducks were down to their final out when Johnny Albrecht hit a game-winning two-run home run to straight away centerfield that Trembley nearly brought back, falling just inches shy of stealing the game one win.

DeSales got two runners on with one out but were unable to find the game tying hit.

Junior JJ Paul took the loss in relief of Poccia who pitched eight strong allowing just one earned run, striking out five.  Trembley, Kile, and senior Sergio Diaz each had two hits in the loss.

Game Two (W/6-5)
Needing a win to stay alive, DSU put a run on the board in the first and second innings on an RBI double from freshman Gavin Zavorski an RBI single from junior Robert Lamm.

Once again errors plagued the Bulldogs as they committed a two-out error leading to three runs and Stevens scored two more in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead.

DSU got two back in the fourth on a two-RBI double from Lamm and after a one hour and five minute rain delay scored an unearned run in the fifth to tie the game at five.

The game remained tied into the eighth when the Bulldogs took advantage of two Duck errors as Kile hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield plating the eventual game-winnng run.

Sophomore Ryan Rieber was outstanding out of the bullpen tossing 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief allowing just two hits and striking out two.

Trembley had two more hits in game two and Lamm was 3-for-4 with three RBIs.  Sophomore Joe Grigas IV scored twice.
