Volleyball Returns to Action; Tops Local Rival Moravian, 3-1

Center Valley, PA (September 1, 2021) - For the first time in almost two years the DeSales University volleyball team returned to the court earning a 3-1 (19-25, 25-12, 25-13, 25-19) win over local rival Moravian University in the 2021 season opener on Wednesday evening in Billera Hall.

  • This was DeSales' first match since the MAC Freedom playoffs at the end of the 2019 season.
  • DSU has now won five straight and 10 of the last 11 over the Greyhounds.
How it Happened
  • DeSales struggled in its first set since 2019, committing 16 total errors allowing Moravian to take a 1-0 lead by a 25-19 score.
  • DSU rebounded over the final three sets, hitting .385 and .226 as a team in the second and third sets to take a 2-1 lead and finished off the win with a 25-19 fourth set victory.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Junior Diane Pugay led the attack with 14 kills and hit .310, while sophomore Shannon McDevitt added 12 kills and hit .476 adding two blocks, and junior Caroline Garretson totaled 11 kills and two blocks.
  • Senior Audrey Wolfe finished with 38 assists, four aces, and nine digs.
  • Junior McKenzie Brady was outstanding on defense finishing with 21 digs and added two aces.
  • Junior Austen Brewer had six kills and 13 digs and freshman Mykenah Calder had 10 digs and two blocks.
For the Foes
  • Renee Mapa led the Greyhounds with seven kills and hit .545 and added three blocks.
  • Gabby Mancini added 11 digs and three aces in the loss.
Inside the Box Score
  • DSU shook off a tough first set to hit .180 for the match.
  • DeSales had 12 service aces and enjoyed a 62-45 advantage in digs.
