Volleyball Drops Five-Setter to Rutgers-Camden

Center Valley, PA (September 3, 2021) - The DeSales University volleyball team dropped a five-setter to Rutgers-Camden to open its home tournament on Friday evening in Billera Hall.

The Basics
  • Final Score: Rutgers-Camden - 3, DeSales - 2 (25-19, 26-28, 25-20, 21-25, 9-15)
  • Records: DeSales (1-1); Rutgers-Camden (1-0)
  • This is DSU's first career loss to Scarlet Raptors having entered the match with a 9-0 career record.  The Bulldogs had only ever lost one set in the first nine meetings.
How it Happened
  • The Bulldogs cruised thru the first set never trailing and committing just four hitting errors en route to a 25-19 win.
  • Rutgers-Camden was the aggressor in the second set opening up an early lead before DSU scored four straight points down 24-20 to tie the score.
  • The Bulldogs had a set point at 26-25, but were unable to win the point and two straight service aces gave Rutgers the second set win.
  • DeSales jumped out early in the third set and never looked back as Camden hit just .037 in the third set.
  • In the fourth set the Scarlet Raptors scored the first three points and never trailed holding on for a 25-21 win to force the fifth set.
  • The fifth set was tied at two before Rutgers-Camden scored four of the next five points on three Bulldog errors and DSU was never able to recover to drop the match.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Sophomore Shannon McDevitt hit very well totaling a team-high 15 kills and hitting .483, but had just one block.
  • Junior Caroline Garretson added 14 kills and hit .345 with four blocks.
  • Junior Diane Pugay finished with 12 kills and three blocks.
  • Senior Audrey Wolfe totaled 35 assists, while junior McKenzie Brady had 21 digs and three aces.
For the Foes
  • Camden was led by Erica Nebrich and Dyamond Free with 11 kills each.
  • Morgan Fox was outstanding on the back row with 21 digs.
  • Kaliyah Moss had seven kills and five blocks.
  • Brinn Hassan finished with 34 assists and 10 digs.
Inside the Box Score
  • The Bulldogs totaled 61 kills as a team, 18 more than Rutgers-Camden, but committed 31 errors.
  • Rutgers-Camden had eight team blocks as compared to just five for DeSales.
  • Both teams had 62 digs.
