Women's Basketball Returns with 71-56 Win over King's

Center Valley, PA (January 12, 2022) - For the first time in 23 days the DeSales University women's basketball team returned to action earning a 71-56 win over King's College in MAC Freedom action on Wednesday evening in Billera Hall.

The Basics
  • Final Score: DeSales - 71, King's - 56
  • Records: DeSales (8-3, 6-0 MAC Freedom); King's (8-6, 3-3 MAC Freedom)
  • It is DSU's third straight win the series with King's improving the Bulldogs all-time record vs. the Monarchs to 45-28.
  • The Bulldogs have now won seven straight on the season and 19 straight at home, four shy of tying the all-time mark.
  • The win is also #598 for head coach Fred Richter, two wins shy of earning win #600 in his career.
How it Happened
  • Despite the 23-day layoff DeSales jumped out early taking a 10-2 lead over the first three minutes and out-scored King's, 25-14, in the first quarter to take an 11-point lead.
  • The lead swelled to as many as 13 points in the second quarter but KC hung around scoring the final four points of the half to trail by just nine (39-30) at the break.
  • The Bulldogs held the Monarchs without a field goal for the first 8:50 of third quarter six straight points to end the quarter cut a 15-point deficit down to just nine once again after three quarters of play.
  • DSU led by 13 (63-50) with 3:11 to go before five straight points cut it down to eight, but two free throws from senior Averi Jordan and a backdoor lay-up from junior Megan Bealer pushed the lead back to 12 points before the final tally was posted.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Jordan recorded her third double-double of the year with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Sophomore Mikaela Reese finished with 15 points and nine boards, adding three blocks.
  • Bealer also reached double digits with 12 points.
  • Sophomore Lindsey Welsh came off the bench to score nine points and added six boards and five assists.
For the Foes
  • Junior Emily Morano had a terrific game for the Monarchs with 23 points.
  • Alli Lindsay came off the bench to score 14 points and pull down a team-high six rebounds.
Inside the Box Score
  • The Bulldogs shot 45.0 percent from the field and were near perfect from the foul line hitting 12-for-13 from the charity stripe.
  • KC converted just 34.5 percent from the field.
  • DeSales out-rebounded King's, 43-30, and scored 40 of its 71 points in the paint.
