Volleyball Clinches Spot in MAC Freedom Postseason with 3-0 Win over Wilkes

Center Valley, PA (October 19, 2022) - The DeSales University volleyball team clinched a spot in the MAC Freedom postseason tournament after a 3-0 win over Wilkes University in MAC Freedom action on Wednesday evening in Billera Hall.

The Basics
  • Final Score: DeSales - 3, Wilkes - 0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-16)
  • Records: DeSales (14-9, 5-1 MAC Freedom); Wilkes (6-17, 2-5 MAC Freedom)
  • It is DSU's ninth straight win over the Colonels improving the Bulldogs to 30-4 all-time vs. Wilkes. DeSales is 13-0 all-time at home vs. the Colonels.
  • The playoff berth is DeSales' 19th overall in the MAC Freedom and marks the 15th straight year the Bulldogs will be in the MAC Freedom postseason tournament.
How it Happened
  • The first set was all Colonels till late when the Bulldogs scored five straight points to take a 19-18 lead and pulled away from there to earn the first set win.
  • The Bulldogs jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second set and led the entire way until Wilkes scored five straight late to tie the score at 20.
  • DSU answered with four straight points and never looked back to take a 2-0 lead.
  • The third set was all DeSales as they committed just two hitting errors and hit .500 to close out the match easily.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • First-year Abby Weise led the way with eight kills and added three aces.
  • Sophomore Samantha Worontzoff had seven kills, hitting .462, and added four blocks.
  • Junior Shannon McDevitt added five kills and two blocks.
  • Senior Diane Pugay finished with six kills hitting .455 in what was a balanced attack for DeSales.
  • Junior Grace Grandinetti had 24 assists and senior McKenzie Brady finished with 14 digs.
For the Foes
  • Nicole Fitzpatrick led all hitters with nine kills.
  • Alexa Cassel had 21 assists.
Inside the Box Score
  • DSU hit .247 for the match and six team blocks.
  • Wilkes committed nine service errors and had two just aces.
