Defense Carries Women's Basketball past Muhlenberg, 58-49

Center Valley, PA (November 16, 2022) - The DeSales University women's basketball team held Muhlenberg College to just 49 points in a 58-49 win over the Mules in non-conference action on Wednesday evening the 2022-23 season home opener.

The Basics
  • Final Score: DeSales - 58, Muhlenberg - 49
  • Records: DeSales (3-0 Overall); Muhlenberg (1-1 Overall)
  • This was the 51st career meeting between the two teams with DSU now holding a 31-20 lead in the all-time series. The Bulldogs improve to 14-9 vs. the Mules at home.
  • DeSales extends its school-record home win streak to 28 straight games with the win.
How it Happened
  • As is nearly every battle between these two teams, points were hard to come by as both teams had the defensive dials turned up in this one.
  • Neither team had more than a 2-point lead thru the first quarter with DeSales clinging to a 16-15 lead after 10 minutes of play.
  • DeSalees extended its one point lead into a nine point lead (26-17) midway thru the second quarter before MC finished the quarter on an 11-4 run to pull within two (30-28) at the halftime break.
  • The Bulldogs took control in the third quarter holding Muhlenberg to just 11 third quarter points and building as much as a 17-point lead (48-31) at the 3:11 mark before the Mules finished the quarter on an 8-2 run to pull within 11 after three quarters of play.
  • Points were hard to come by the fourth quarter and DSU continued to lead by double digits (54-44) with 4:52 to go before a jumper from Ava Connolly got MC within eight with 3:58 remaining.
  • Junior Mikaela Reese had the answer hitting a pull-up jumper from the free throw line at the 2:43 mark to regain the 10-point cushion and first-year Mikaili Donmoyer sealed the win with a fast break lay-up with 14 seconds left.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Reese finished with a team-high 13 points adding eight rebounds, five steals, and three blocks in the win.
  • Juniors Lindsey Welsh and Abigail Rafferty each hadd 11 points with Rafferty totaling eight rebounds and two blocks and Welsh finishing with six boards, three assists, and three steals.
  • Senior Megan Bealer had another strong game totaling seven points, eight rebounds, five assists, and five steals.
For the Foes
  • Connolly totaled 16 points to lead Muhlenberg.
  • Margaux Eripret recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Inside the Box Score
  • DeSales won the rebounding battle with a slim 45-42 margin.
  • DSU forced 25 Mule turnovers leading to a 24-3 edge in points off turnovers.
  • The Bulldogs scored 42 of its 58 points in the paint and 18 second chance points.
