Rafferty Double-Double; Second-Half Defense Moves DeSales to 10-0

Center Valley, PA (December 20, 2022) - Junior Abigail Rafferty recorded her first career double-double with 27 points and 13 rebounds leading the 12th ranked DeSales University women's basketball team past Cabrini University, 68-50, on Tuesday afternoon.

The Basics

  • Records: DeSales (10-0 overall); Cabrini (2-9 overall)
  • It DSU's second straight win vs. the Cavaliers and improves the Bulldogs to 41-10 in the all-time series.
  • It is the first 10-0 start to the season since the 2002-03 season when DeSales opened the year 14-0.

How it Happened

  • A high scoring first-half in which DeSales give up a season-high 37 points in the first-half saw the Bulldogs trailing by three points at the half.
  • DeSales led by as many as six points in the first quarter but a back-and-forth second quarter, in which the Cavaliers shot 60 percent from the field, gave CU a three-point lead after a three-pointer at the buzzer to end the half.
  • The Cavaliers his six three-pointers in the first-half.
  • The Bulldogs dominated the second-half turning up the defensive dial and allowing just 13 total points over the final 20 minutes.
  • DSU opened the third quarter with an 18-2 run to take a 52-39 lead before a banked in three at the third quarter buzzer cut the margin to 10 after three quarters of play.
  • The lead hovered around 10 points over the first three and a half minutes until the Bulldogs finished the game on an 11-2 run to post the final tally.

  • Rafferty was unstoppable shooting 12-for-23 from the field and pulling down eight offensive rebounds among her 13 pulls.
  • Senior Megan Bealer added 19 points and three steals.
  • Junior Lindsey Welsh finished with 10 points, four assists, and five steals.
  • Senior Maria Newsome totaled nine points and four helpers and junior Mikaela Reese returned from injury with a career-high eight blocks on the defensive end tying the single-game record.

  • Miranda Liebtag finished with a team-high 15 points and added nine rebounds.
  • Giana Rullo totaled 10 points off the bench.
  • Abby Paolini totaled nine points.

  • After Cabrini shot 45.5 percent in the first half, DeSales held the Cavaliers to just 3-for-29 (10.3 percent).
