Penalties Spoil Men's Lacrosse Comeback in 13-12 OT Loss to Eastern

Center Valley, PA (March 16, 2022) - Eastern University scored its fifth man-up goal of the game just eight seconds into the first overtime period to claim a 13-12 win over the DeSales University men's lacrosse team on Wednesday evening.

The Basics
  • Final Score: Eastern - 13, DeSales - 12 (OT)
  • Records: DeSales (3-2); Eastern (2-4)
  • This was the 16th career meeting between the long-time former MAC Freedom foes with the Eagles moving to 14-2 all-time with the win.
  • It was DSU's third OT game of the season and its first loss in the extra session games.
How it Happened
  • The Eagles opened the game with the first two goals before the Bulldogs siezed the momentum scoring four straight to claim a 4-2 lead at the 13:11 mark of the second quarter.
  • Eastern answered that run with some momentum of its own scoring five straight including the first goal of the second-half to take a 7-4 lead.
  • DSU momentarily quieted the spurt cutting the deficit down to two goals but three more markers from Eastern made it a 10-5 game with 8:59 to go in the third quarter.
  • The Bulldogs showed no quit scoring two straight to end the third stanza to get within three goals.
  • EU started the fourth quarter with a goal before DeSales answered with three straight to get within a goal (11-10).
  • The Eagles scored its fourth man-up goal of the game with 4:19 left, reclaiming a two-goal lead, but DeSales was once again up to the task tying the game with two straight, the last coming with 1:47 left on the clock.
  • Eastern won the ensuing face-off and after securing a rebound on a saved shot reseting the shot clock to 60, the Eagles drew a penalty and let the clock run out on regulation giving them possession to start the OT period and scored on a set play eight seconds into overtime for its fifth man-up goal of the game.

  • Sophomore Pat Schuett led DeSales with two goals and four assists for six points.
  • Graduate student Jalen Holmes finished with three goals and one helper, adding a team-high tying five ground balls.
  • Junior Beau Neff and sophomore TJ Herron each had two goals and one assist.
  • First-year Nate Perry finished with three assists, while senior Zach Bowen and sophomore Chase Bowman each had a goal and an assist.
  • Sophomore Quinten Lyons finished with 13 saves in goal.
  • Junior Zach Broomall won 6-of-15 face-offs and had five ground balls and senior Chase Yoder added 6-of-12 on the face-off.
For the Foes
  • Avery Porter had three goals and three assists for six points.
  • Nicholas Fanelli finished with three goals and two assists and Christopher Fanelli scored three times.
  • Patrick McClain won 15-of-24 face-offs and had seven ground balls.
  • Ethan Myers finished with eight saves.
Inside the Box Score
  • Eastern out-shot DeSales, 41-35 and both teams had 32 ground balls.
  • EU was just 16-for-24 on the clear, while DSU was 12-for-15.
  • The Bulldogs forced 21 Eagle turnovers.
  • Eastern was a very efficient 5-for-7 in man-up situations.
