Women's Soccer Opens Season with 5-0 Shutout Win over Neumann

Center Valley, PA (September 1, 2022) - The DeSales University women's soccer team opened the 2022 season with a 5-0 win over Neumann University in non-conference action at home on Thursday afternoon.

The Basics
  • Final Score: DeSales - 5, Neumann - 0
  • Records: DeSales (1-0 overall); Neumann (0-1 overall)
  • It is the sixth straight season the Bulldogs have won their opening game of the season.
  • DSU is now 7-1 all-time vs. the Knights and a perfect 5-0 at home.
How it Happened
  • DeSales claimed a 2-0 halftime lead with two first-half goals separated by just under three minutes in the 36th and 39th minute.
  • Junior Elizabeth McCarthy opened the scoring with a rocket from about 30 yards out that snuck inside the upper 90 far post for her first career goal.
  • Sophomore Emma Ribeiro made it a two-goal game just 2:57 later when she took possession just outside the 18, turned, dribbled past a Knight defender into the box and beat the keeper inside the left post.
  • Senior Meghan Foley made it 3-0 in the 64th minute, taking control of a failed clear and hitting a shot that caromed straight down off the crossbar but was ruled over the line for her first marker of the season.
  • Junior Kerrigan de Meij got on the board in the 73rd minute taking a pass from McCarthy and scoring just inside the 18, while first-year Madison O'Connor scored in her first collegiate game hitting a one-timer off a nice centering feed from Foley in the 85th minute.
  • Junior Hannah Pacheco earns the shutout playing all 90 minutes in goal not needing to make a save.

  • Foley and McCarthy each earned assists in the win.
  • Foley's goal was the ninth of her career.
For the Foes
  • Leona Macrina made nine saves in the net for the Knights.
