Late Bucket Snaps Men's Basketball Nine-Game Win Streak at Shenandoah

Winchester, VA (January 9, 2022) - Shenandoah University hit a turn around jumper with five seconds left snapping the DeSales University men's basketball team nine-game winning streak in a 61-58 loss at Shenandoah on Monday afternoon.

  • The loss snaps a nine-game winning streak for the Bulldogs.
  • This was the first meeting between these two teams since the 1992-93 season as the Bulldogs record moves to 5-8 with the loss in the all-time series.
How it Happened
  • The Bulldogs got off to a quick start scoring the first eight points of the game after a three from senior Jordan Holmqvist.
  • The Hornets quickly recovered, tying the game at 10 and out-scoring DeSales, 30-9, over the next 12 minutes to take a 30-17 lead.
  • DSU chipped away and got within three at the break after a lay-up with seven seconds left in the opening twenty minutes.
  • It was back-and-forth nearly the entire second-half as both teams struggle to find the scoring touch.
  • The Bulldogs trailed by six at the under eight media timeout but scored seven straight points to take a 56-55 with 2:29 to go on a free throw from junior Elijah Eberly.
  • The two teams traded baskets that saw DSU still leading by one with 1:37 to go and each team traded defensive stops as Shenandoah took possession with 37 seconds left.
  • DeSales committed two fouls with fouls to give and the Hornets inbounded with nine seconds left as Malik Jordan hit a baseline turnaround jumper with five seconds left.
  • The Bulldogs called timeout and the ensuing inbounds pass was stolen and DeSales was forced to foul.
  • SU made both free throws with four seconds left and Holmqvist was able to get a game-tying three-pointer off from the left wing but it was long as time expired.

  • Eberly was the lone double digit scorer for DeSales with 14 points and added eight rebounds.
  • Junior Caleb Gibbs had nine points and junior Ryan Boylan finished with eight points and seven rebounds.
For the Foes
  • Jordan had a game-high 16 points and Davion Roberts totaled 13 points.
  • Joshua Stephen added 11 points off the bench.
Inside the Box Score
  • The Bulldogs shot a season-low 35.8 percent from the field, hitting just 24.0 (6-for-31) from the field in the second-half.
